Migrating SQL On-Prem to Azure
With data growing at a rapid pace and the value of that data becoming more valuable by the day, companies are looking to make their applications and infrastructure more scalable, reliable, and cost effective. Many businesses today have their databases deployed on-premise. When deployed on-premise, you have complete control over your hardware and software. But you need to pay for in-house dedicated servers, licensing software, and a maintenance team. Additionally, you are responsible for all ongoing costs of the server hardware, space, and power consumption.
Such cost issues create a need to migrate your database from SQL on-prem to the Azure database.
Benefits of migrating from SQL on-prem to Azure are:
- Reduce cost: Moving to the Azure cloud allows you to no longer have to invest in expensive, upfront hardware and infrastructure costs. And in several Azure models, you can get the database software included as well. This helps to reduce the upfront costs (cash flow) and exposure to multi-year commitments (risk), shifts costs from a Capital Expense to an Operating Expense allowing for better budgeting and not having to to deal with financial concerns of dealing with Capital Assets.
- Increased Business Agility: The ability to provision new Azure resources can be minutes as opposed to days/weeks in on-premise environments. This allows for a quicker time to market and or responding to critical business issues that arise.
- Scalability and Flexibility: When sizing on-premise infrastructure you need to plan for multi-year growth upfront. This impacts not only your infrastructure costs but also your software licensing costs. The Azure cloud allows you the flexibility to size what you need today (minimally) and scale for your needs dynamically as the requirements arise.
- Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery: The cloud allows you to build out business continuity/Standby/Disaster Recovery into your architecture, whether it is the first step in migrating to the cloud and or adding resiliency to your on-premise platform. Azure provides multiple options from Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) or Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) options to include the database (DBaaS) and infrastructure.
